Education is as important as the air we breathe. It is the most important possession a person must have. People through education to foster their qualities. In America high school, students have different problems that make it hard to enroll in college. Basically, high school students are required to pass the ACT or SAT test to get in college. But many students are not succeeding. In fact, some colleges have been swelled with enrollment in remedial classes for freshmen to reinforce reading, writing or math. Those colleges spent $33 million last year on remediation. However, these basic subjects should have already been mastered in high school. Unfortunately, more than half of students have some problems with them including native students. According to research information, I will show you several solutions below.
The high school students’ parents usually have the same question “will my child get into a good college?” We know that education not only requires limited study time and learn knowledge from textbook. First, parents should afford chances to children that let them solve real-life problems by themselves.Parents should resist just telling them the solution. In this way, it can promote their solutioncapable. Second of all, students need to learn how to present good ideas to varied people. Parents should let students join group work to get ideas from group members and get more communication with teachers, coaches or friends. Third, in school, there is only one right answer. In this way, students are close-minded. In parents’ situation, parents have to give some problematical situations to children. They should let children help them brainstorm ways to figure things out. The purpose is building children’s agility and adaptability. Furthermore, parents and children should establish friendship. Such as going to the computer together to research what questions children have. Discussing together and letting child speak his opinion out. Finally, have non-force communication, tell children what them like in his essay, will approved his ability to give confidences.
One of another solution is extend school time. According to education reporter YOSV GONEN, New York education association is voting on three courses of action about high school graduation requirements. The first one is extending the school year from 180 days to 200 days and ascendingthe school day to 8 hours. Second, awarding high school credits to students as soon as they master the work rather than mandating a minimum amount of class time. Third, raising the passing score on English regents to 75 and on algebra regents to 80, from the current marks of 65.
Finally, education department should not decrease manpower resources. Have you heard a report called “LIFO foes launch new ‘air’ attacks”? It is a report against the “last in, first out” law for teacher layoffs. Parents always consider whether their children have the best teacher. We can not lose any manpower resources. That means changing Albany’s outdated law so we can keep teachers based on merit, not seniority. We don’t need to lay off any teacher because the city get 3$billion surplus.
In my opinion, I intensively object to the “last in first out” law. Students should not always have the outdated study style. A new fresh study style needs to be contact with high school students. The education department has to stop this law, and let some young teachers give knowledge in colorful ways. Moreover, schools have to offer more group work time to students. Working together is an effective way to promote students’ skill. Students practice together to find weakness out, than help each other to overcome weakness. Also, students can be more open-minded by discussing with group members to get more ideas in writing test. High school students are teenagers, they are probably not able to finish all the work by themselves. Teachers and parents should give some appropriate pressures to them. Sometimes, students can do better under-stress.
