CLIP
CLIP stands from CUNY Language Immersion Program. It is a program for students who want to go to college but their native language is not English. The CLIP has the same goal as the ESL classes on campus. Making the best way for the first step of college that is very important, I recommend the CLIP. I will show you three advantageous reasons: cost, education and more class time.
Attending the CLIP is much cheaper than the ESL. The tuition at CUNYprogram costs $180 for a semester. The tuition for ESL would cost more than $1000. The ESL is part of college class, but without credit. We can see the ratio between the CLIP and the ESL would be 1:20. In addition, the ESL would require students to buy textbooks.
Second, the CLIP offers more communication between teachers and students. The students in CLIPprogram are more activity. The professors are very patient in answering student questions. Everyday we have more than an hour of group work time. It is a good opportunity to work together with classmates and get new ideas from others. In addition, the CLIP teachers go deeply and more specific at writing and grammar. In the ESL class, it is a monotonous and independent study style.
Finally, let’s compare the class time. The CLIP is 5 hours per a day. We have ample time to do various practices. Sometimes, teacher would play vocabulary games with us to promote the memory ability of words. The ESL is less than 5 hours a week. In addition, the CLIP program class schedule has included an hour lab time. We get useful research under teachers’ instruction.
The decision to choose the CUNY language immersion program or the ESL class is a very important step for new college students. It is clear that the students would get more effective study opportunitiesin the CLIP.
